
BEAR SCARE is a Western Canadian based company that specializes in the training of non-lethal methods to prevent human/wildlife conflicts. Training courses vary from “non-lethal bear management training” for law enforcement and wildlife managers to safety orientated training for working or recreating in bear and cougar country. BEAR SCARE’s non-lethal bear management training and safety courses are endorsed by the Get Bear Smart Society, Canadians for Bears and the Humane Society of the United States. Previous clients of BEAR SCARE include the RCMP, B.C. Search and Rescue, Resort Municipality of Whistler, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service, B.C. Forest Service, Halliburton Energy Services and Suncor Energy.
The president and chief instructor of Bear Scare Ltd. is Dan LeGrandeur. Dan has 18 years of field experience managing human/wildlife conflicts. His vast knowledge in this unique field is a result of his experience as a B.C. Conservation Officer where he worked in a wide range of environments that ranged from the urban areas of North and West Vancouver to the coastal and rural areas of southwestern B.C., Dan gained extensive experience dealing with a wide variety of conflict situations (farming/ranching, urban areas, remote camps) involving cougars, black bears and grizzlies. His knowledge in all aspects of human/wildlife conflicts further includes educational training (creating Bear Smart communities, bear safety, etc.) trapping, relocation, and tranquilizing. Dan is also a qualified firearms instructor and has considerable experience conducting training courses and public speaking.
Dan’s considerable experience in managing human/bear conflicts is evident in his various accomplishments. Dan was a member of Whistler's Black Bear Task Team and in 1999, he implemented Canada's first non/lethal bear management program in Whistler. He is also the chief training instructor for the Canadian Bear Alliance and Humane Society of the U.S.’s non-lethal bear management programs. Dan was a guest speaker at the 2003 New Jersey Black Bear Conference and testified at the New Jersey State Senate Environmental Commission Hearings regarding human/bear conflicts.
Presently, Dan is a Directed Field Studies Instructor in the Conservation and Enforcement program at the Lethbridge Community College. In addition, Bear Scare Ltd. is continuing to provide its various human/wildlife conflict training courses to both government and private industry.
